'Pirates of Penzance' vs. 'The Pirate Movie'

Year: Late '82/early '83 Premise: Movie adaptations of the famous Gilbert & Sullivan operetta The Verdict: You've maybe heard of the Kevin Kline-Angela Landsbury-Linda Ronstadt version of "Pirates of Penzance," but did you know there was a movie released just a few months earlier starring Kristy McNichol and the guy from "The Blue Lagoon" in "Pirates-of-Penzance"-goes-1980s? Oh, yes. The former saw a Golden Globe nom for Ronstadt, while the latter earned three Razzie wins out of nine nominations - including a win for Worst Song for "Pumpin and Blowin." We cannot make this stuff up. Edge: "Pirates of Penzance," by the biggest margin in this gallery. Though ... "The Pirate Movie" is worth a watch for the humor factor. -- Andrea Reiher, Zap2it Internet Fair Use
