One of the top Oscar winners in movie history, director William Wyler's classic - boasting the most famous chariot race ever filmed - gets a major home-video relaunch. Charlton Heston (who earned his own Academy Award for the epic) has the title role, with Stephen Boyd as his friend-turned-enemy.
The movie was released in 1959, but the "50th Anniversary" restoration took longer than anticipated. Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott and Sam Jaffe also star. DVD extras include: theatrical trailers; audio commentary by Heston and film historian T. Gene Hatcher; "making-of" documentaries; 1925 version of "Ben-Hur"; screen tests; newsreels; 1960 Oscar-ceremony highlights. **** (G) (Also on Blu-ray)Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
