'Jack Goes Boating'

Long regarded as a stage and screen mainstay for his acting, Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Capote") turns film director for the first time with this adaptation of a play he also starred in.

He and Amy Ryan ("Gone Baby Gone") portray people set up with each other by mutual friends, and their relationship develops slowly, to put it mildly ... but that also allows the stars to put plentiful nuance into the characters and situation. John Ortiz, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Lola Glaudini also appear. DVD extras: two "making-of" documentaries; deleted scenes. *** (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray)
