FOX's unscripted guru Mike Darnell is hoping to use his powers for good, rather than evil, with the new series "Secret Millionaire."
Tapping into a vein of reality show altruism usually reserved for ABC, FOX's "Secret Millionaire" is based on an RDF UK format and the Channel 4 hit of the same name and will be produced by Chris Coelen, Greg Goldman and Bruce Toms.
In "Secret Millionaire," a group of wealthy individuals will go undercover in impoverished neighborhoods. Forced to live on minimum wage, they'll get to know members of the community and see what it's like at the bottom of the economic ladder.
The series was shot under the guise of a documentary, so the show's subjects don't know that at the end of the journey, their new friends are going to reveal their true identities and give of gift of at least $100,000 (possibly more).
FOX's press release promises us that "The millionaires will be touched by the people they meet. Some will inspire with their dedication to helping others, while others will relay stories of overcoming tremendous odds."
While its time slot and premiere date are yet to be determined, "Secret Millionaire" will be one of several news shows unveiled by FOX at the network's upfront presentation on Thursday (Feb. 15).Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
