Pilots: Coolidge Joins ABC's 'Family'

Jennifer Coolidge and Alan Ruck are becoming part of the "Family of the Year" at ABC.

The two actors head the latest round of pilot casting, which also includes Alex Borstein joining "The Thick of It" at ABC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At FOX, Alanna Ubach has joined "Playing Chicken," and Josh Dean will tend "The Beast." The CW has cast "My Girl" star Anna Chlumsky in its comedy "Eight Days a Week."

"Family of the Year" centers on the Holloways, who have won the titular crown in their New Mexico town for 10 years running. Their status is challenged, though, by the arrival of some new neighbors. Coolidge will play an ex-beauty queen who heads the Holloway clan, with Ruck cast as her dim-bulb husband.

Coolidge co-starred in NBC's "Joey" for its two-season run and is a regular in Christopher Guest's films, most recently "For Your Consideration." She also appeared in "Click" and "Epic Movie" recently.

Ruck was a regular on "Spin City" and has recently guested on "Medium" and "Stargate: Atlantis." His movie credits include "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Speed."

In "The Thick of It," Borstein will play the press secretary for a low-level congressman. She voices Lois Griffin on FOX's "Family Guy" and will next be seen in "The Lookout," due in theaters next week.

FOX's "Playing Chicken" centers on brothers (Norbert Leo Butz, Bill Burr) who hold opposing views on most everything but move in together after Butz's character is left wheelchair-bound after an accident. Ubach ("Legally Blonde," "Meet the Fockers") will play his physical therapist.

Also at FOX, "Free Ride" star Dean will play the assistant of Steve Howey's skirt-chasing veterinarian in "The Beast."

Over at The CW, Chlumsky has landed one of the leads in "Eight Days a Week," a comedy about the harried assistants of the rich and powerful. Chlumsky has guested on "Law & Order" and "30 Rock" this season.
