Is any author as synonymous with the phrase "summer blockbuster" as Goethe?
Walt Disney Pictures is moving forward on a live-action version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which will be produced by Nicolas Cage's Saturn Films shingle and may end up being a potential starring vehicle for the Oscar-winning actor.
Most kids are familiar with the story, based on the ballad by Goethe (and built around the musical composition by Paul Dukas) from the Mickey Mouse-centric segment of the animated classic "Fantasia." You know the one, with the poor apprentice left by his magical master and eventually getting overrun by dancing brooms?
According to Variety, the fresh take is being adapted by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal ("Eragon").
In addition to Cage and his Saturn Partner Norm Golightly, Todd Garner's Broken Road Prods. shingle will produce.
Broken Road and Saturn are also producing Cage's spring starring vehicle "Next." The actor, most recently seen in "World Trade Center," has "Ghost Rider" coming out this Friday (Feb. 16).Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
