Bette Davis

In one of the most scandalous Oscar snubs of all time, Davis was denied a nomination for her breakout performance in "Of Human Bondage" due to studio politics (she was under contract with Warner Bros. but the picture was released by RKO). Her name was permitted as a write-in vote on the final ballots, but she still lost -- a controversy that led to the now standard use of an outside accounting firm to tally the Academy's votes.
