What it is: Buddy-cop movies are thought of as more of a staple of movies, but there have been a fair number of TV shows relying on yin-and-yang police duos as well. Current example: It's not a prototypical buddy show, but "Law & Order: SVU," with Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Chris Meloni) front and center, is about the closest thing to one currently on the air. The genre stew that is "Psych" could also qualify. Classics: "Cagney & Lacey" and "Miami Vice," two very different but very successful 1980s series that showcased the relationships between partners (Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless in the former, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the latter). Others: "Streets of San Francisco," "Starsky and Hutch," "CHiPs," "New York Undercover"
