What it is: There have been a number of straight-up comedies featuring police officers and a handful of ostensible dramas populated with a cast of goofy eccentrics. Current example: "The Unusuals," which premieres on ABC in April and features a paranoid detective who always wears a Kevlar vest (Harold Perrineau) and another detective with a death wish (Adam Goldberg). Classic: "Barney Miller," the underrated 1970s sitcom about the chatty and apparently underworked detectives of the 12th Precinct. Others: "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Job," "Reno 911," "Police Squad!"
