Wolfgang Petersen's mega-budgeted "Poseidon" doesn't seem like a typical festival film, but the disaster epic will hold its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.
The fest has scheduled a gala event for Saturday, May 6 featuring the first open showing of "Poseidon" along with appearances by many of the film's stars.
"'Poseidon' is one of those great summer action films that you can't wait to see and we are pleased to be able to host its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival," says Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Festival. "Warner Bros. has supported the Festival with a film premiere each year since our founding, and this year they bring us Wolfgang Petersen and his talented cast."
The "Poseidon" ensemble features Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Jacinda Barrett, Mike Vogel, Mia Maestro, Jimmy Bennett and Andre Braugher. A bit like the 1972 "Poseidon Adventure" (and NBC's 2005 Steve Guttenberg-centric telefilm), the film focuses on a luxury liner capsized by a giant wave and the valiant attempts by the survivors to, well, survive.
"We are truly honored and delighted to be a part of the Tribeca Film Festival and to offer New York audiences advance passage on 'Poseidon,'" says Petersen ("The Perfect Storm"). "'Poseidon' was made for audiences like this, people who truly love movies and the film-going experience, who go to the theater expecting to be transported to a entirely different world."
"Poseidon" will be released May 12, 2006, in both standard and IMAX theaters worldwide.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
