Prince Lands Super Bowl Halftime Gig

The Super Bowl halftime show, a traditional venue for musical royalty, will showcase Prince this February.

A six-time Grammy winner and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Prince will score one of the year's most viewed television slots when he takes the field at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 4 in the middle of Super Bowl XLI.

Since Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake used the Super Bowl halftime show as a vehicle to introduce the world the phrase "wardrobe malfunction," other halftime performers have included Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones.

Super Bowl XLI will be CBS' first telecast of the big game since Nipplegate brought the wrath of the FCC down hard on all of network television. Under such circumstances, the selection of the double-entendre-prone singer of such hits as "Little Red Corvette," "Kiss" and "Cream" might almost be construed as risky. A safer choice might have been a selection of duets performed by John Popper and Carnie Wilson.

Last week, Prince ("Prince Rogers Nelson" on his birth certificate) was nominated for five more Grammys. He's sold nearly 100 million albums worldwide.
