Valentine's Day Viewers Heart 'Idol'

The revelation of the top 24 singers on "American Idol" powered FOX to another ratings victory on Wednesday.

FOX averaged an 11.8 rating/18 share in primetime, scoring a good-sized win over CBS, 8.0/13. NBC finished third at 5.6/9. ABC was fourth at 4.9/8, while The CW trailed at 2.1/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's lead was even wider. It scored an 8.1 rating in the demo, more than double that of second-place CBS, 3.5. ABC took third at 3.3, followed by NBC, 2.7, and The CW, 1.5.

"Bones," 7.5/12, put FOX on top at 8 p.m. The clip show "Return to Jericho" earned a 5.0/8 for CBS. NBC's "Friday Night Lights" scored a better-than-average 4.8/8, topping "George Lopez" and "The Knights of Prosperity" on ABC. The finale of "Beauty and the Geek" drew a 2.6/4.

At 9 p.m., "American Idol" pared its field to 24 semifinalists, scoring a 16.1/24 in the process. CBS got a 9.6/14 from "Criminal Minds." NBC stayed in third with "Deal or No Deal," 6.3/9, while a repeat of "Lost" posted a 3.2/5 for ABC. The CW went with "One Tree Hill."

CBS took the lead at 10 p.m. with "CSI: NY," 9.4/15. With no lead-in to speak of, "Lost" managed only a 7.6/12, its lowest rating ever for a new episode. NBC's "Medium" came in at 5.7/9.
