'Rocky' Wins First-Round Box Office


"Rocky Balboa" has come out swinging.

The sixth film in the franchise debuted on Wednesday with approximately $6.2 million in ticket sales, according to Exhibitor Relations.

The critically praised "Rocky," which marks a comeback for star Sylvester Stallone as well, opened in 2,752 theaters, making an average of $2,254 per screen.

It will expand to 3,017 theaters Friday in order to keep up with the competition.

The Ben Stiller comedy "Night at the Museum" is likely to take the No. 1 position this weekend, while the football drama "We Are Marshall" and Matt Damon spy thriller "The Good Shepherd" also open wide.

Christmas Day will also introduce some new players, including an expansion of "Dreamgirls" and the horror remake "Black Christmas."
