'Wolverine' Scratches Out 2009 Release Date

The cumbersomely titled "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has set a 2009 release date and one major co-star is ready to join Hugh Jackman in the cast.

According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has selected May 1, 2009 to premiere the franchise pic, which will be directed by Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi").

In addition, the trade paper is reporting the Liev Schreiber is in final talks to play William Styker, in a younger version of the character played by Brian Cox in "X2."

"Wolverine" will begin shooting later this year from a script by David Benioff. The pic is expected to deal with the origins of loveably gruff mutant with the adamantium skeleton and retractable claws, plus his relationship with Victor Creed and the Weapon X program.

Shooting will take place in Australia, New Zealand and eventually New Orleans, which leads the trade to speculate that the Big Easy's favorite mutant Gambit will be involved in the plot somehow.

Schreiber, most recently seen on a "CSI" arc, has "Love in the Time of Cholera" set for release later this year. His other credits include "The Painted Veil" and "The Omen."
