'Silent Hill' Poster Contest Winner Unveiled

For one "Silent Hill" fan, the Darkness has arrived, and he couldn't be happier.

On Monday, Feb. 27, Sony's TriStar Pictures named Chuck Waite the winner of the "Silent Hill" poster design contest. The El Cerrito, Calif., man's design beat out more than 2,000 online entries by fellow fans and amateurs to be the horror film's official movie poster. "Silent Hill," based on the popular video game, centers on Rose (Radha Mitchell), a young mother who ignores her doctor's recommendation to place her daughter into a psychiatric institution. Instead, she flees to Silent Hill, an abandoned, foggy town where a living Darkness has corrupted everything in its path. When her daughter mysteriously disappears, Rose braves the twisted world and its eerie denizens on her quest to reunite her family.

Waite's poster features Rose's lone figure in the fog, approaching a sign reading "Welcome to Silent Hill" above the ominous tagline, "We've Been Expecting You."

The contest kicked off on Dec. 5 and invited fans to download creative elements on the film's official site, WelcometoSilentHill.com. On Jan. 22, Waite was named one of the five finalists, and in the end, more than 32,000 online votes crowned him the winner.

On top of the bragging rights of having his poster displayed in theaters nationwide, Waite will also receive a cool $2,500 in cash.

"Silent Hill," in theaters nationwide April 21, is directed by Christophe Gans and also stars Sean Bean, Laurie Holden and Deborah Kara Unger.
