TV ratings: CBS hangs with 'American Idol' Tuesday

"American Idol" kept FOX in the top ratings spot Tuesday, but CBS and its dramas made things interesting.

FOX led the night with a 9.7 rating/15 share and 16.58 million viewers, beating the 9.5/15 and 15.19 million viewers for CBS. NBC finished third at 6.4/10. ABC, 5.3/8, came in fourth, and The CW was way back in fifth, drawing a 1.2/2.

FOX's lead among adults 18-49 was wider -- it scored a 6.0 rating in the demographic to finish well in front of NBC's 3.7. CBS took third with a 3.2. ABC averaged 2.0 and The CW 0.8.

"American Idol's" Rat Pack night drew a 13.2/21 for FOX at 8 p.m. "NCIS" -- which introduced a possible spinoff in the episode -- earned a solid 10.0/16. " The Biggest Loser: Couples," 5.4/9, took third for NBC. Two episodes of "According to Jim" put ABC in fourth, while "Reaper" staked a 1.2/2 for The CW.

CBS took the lead 9 thanks to " The Mentalist," which built a little on its lead-in and scored a 10.5/16. ABC jumped up to second with "Dancing with the Stars," 9.2/14. "The Biggest Loser" finished third in households for NBC, but "Fringe" (6.1/9) had more viewers. The CW's "90210" held steady at 1.2/2.

" Without a Trace," 8.0/13, kept CBS in front at 10, although NBC's " Law & Order: SVU" (7.1/12) won the hour in adults 18-49. "Cupid" posted a 4.1/7 for ABC.
