TV Fashion: Mick St. John of `Moonlight'

Halloween is the perfect time to take a chance – sartorially speaking. And if you're a fan of CBS' new drama "Moonlight," airing Fridays, you might even be able to pull off a look that lasts all year.

Vampires, as we've come to know and love them, are amazingly stylish. Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, Anne Rice's Lestat de Lioncourt and Janice Dickinson could all suck your blood and have you appreciate their fine apparel at the same time. And now, we can add Mick St. John (played by Alex O'Loughlin) to the list. Sure, his name is scarier than anything the show can possibly throw at us, but his style has been honed by 60 years of immortality. You've got to figure in that time he's had the opportunity to emulate everyone from Cary Grant to Miles Davis, cherry-picking the best looks from the best dressers.

Costume designer Salvador Perez Jr. certainly understands that Mick is an old soul trapped in the body of a 30-year-old. And because of that he perfectly blends classic styles with updated trends, giving our vampire detective a look that is dark, cool and modernly elegant all at once. Utilizing a palette of navy and black, Perez keeps Mick functional in dark denim paired with ebony or navy dress shirts and slim-fit, single-breasted sport coats with peaked lapels. Adding to the "look," Mick tends to wear his collars turned up – in an obvious nod to the gothic roots of our hero.

The look is easy to replicate at a variety of price points, but to get the full frontal vampire, spare no expense. Starting at the top and working our way down we suggest choosing a tailored suit jacket from Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani or Costume National Homme from their fall/winter collection.

Again, black or midnight is a perfectly acceptable choice for coloring, but know that black often looks blue in artificial lighting and dark navy seems to look black in that very same atmosphere. Frankly, it shouldn't make any difference – though deep navy has a much hipper vibe to it. You could also spice things up a bit by choosing a velvet jacket as well. The texture is amazingly sexy, and vampires know a thing or two about being sexy.

And speaking of sexy, the right dress shirt is imperative. Options by Gucci, Tom Ford or Against My Killer with a dominant collar and unbuttoned to just shy of "Tom Jones Was Here" work well tucked into high-end dark denim. If you like your jeans to have a West Coast vibe, we recommend slipping into a dark wash pair of Kasil Jeans. More mainstream but not less expensive, a pair of Backler low-waisted jeans from Diesel are another great option for that uptown/downtown look. Add a wide, black leather belt with an ornate silver buckle, and finish it off with a pair of Gucci suede moccasins.

Trust us, you'll look so cool the frightened townspeople will want to drive a stake through your heart.
