A look at upcoming events:



Monday

Sportswalk: President Ford, who was a football standout at the University of Michigan, will be posthumously honored at the Sportswalk to the Waterfront in San Pedro.

Bus fares: The Orange County Transportation Authority will hold a community open house to discuss a proposed bus fare increase. At Laguna Hills Community Center.



Tuesday

Financial crisis: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will receive an update from the county treasurer and tax collector on the implications of the falling stock market on county government.



Wednesday

LAX plans: A public hearing will be held to review the draft environmental impact report for the Cross Field Taxiway Project at LAX, which also includes the construction of an adjacent vehicle service road, relocation of several aircraft parking locations and a vehicle parking lot. At the Flight Path Learning Center and Museum.



Thursday

Culture: The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission will discuss the future of Columbia Square in Hollywood, as well as the Stonehurst House and the Moreton Bay fig trees on Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz.



Friday

Author remembered: A memorial service will be held for Oakley Hall, who directed the writing program at UC Irvine for 20 years. Hall was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1958 for "Warlock," a novel with a cult following that offers an alternative account of the shootout at the OK Corral.



Saturday

Ali honored: Boxing icon Muhammad Ali will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at California African American Museum's "An Artful Evening at CAAM" benefit. Photographer Howard Bingham and Los Angeles radio station KJLH will also be honored.

Purses on display: "Purse and the Person," an exhibit of purses and related objects developed from a private collection of nearly 2,000 handbags, explores the lives of various women by focusing on their purses. Fullerton Museum Center.

When is the last day to register to vote in the November election?

You must register by Oct. 20. According to the Los Angeles registrar of voters: "You may register by completing a registration-by-mail form. Forms are available throughout Los Angeles County at most county buildings, city halls, fire stations, libraries, state motor vehicle offices, public assistance offices and post offices. Voter information and/or registration forms can be obtained at the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Norwalk headquarters and all district offices. Registration-by-mail forms may be requested during regular business hours by calling the election information section in Norwalk, or district offices, or the voter Registration request line (800) 481-VOTE (8683)."



The Tip

The California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat Hawthorn Candy, which is imported from China, after tests found elevated levels of lead. According to the agency, "Consumers in possession of Hawthorn Candy should discard it immediately."





It's November and it's officially fat-pants season. That's right.
 
Go ahead and cut back on dining out if you need to, but don't cut it out of your budget altogether. Southern California's restaurants need your dollars.
