Angels fall to Orioles, 7-6, on home run in the 12th inning

KEY MOMENT: Albert Pujols hit a two-out single in the 12th, but Manager Mike Scioscia chose not to pinch-run J.B. Shuck for the slow-footed slugger. Josh Hamilton doubled to right-center, but Pujols stopped at third. Erick Aybar lined out to end the inning, and Manny Machado led off the bottom of the 12th with a game-winning homer. “They were in ‘no doubles’ defense, so there’s nobody on our team, except maybe Mike Trout, who would have a chance to score on that ball,” Scioscia said. “It was going to take two hits to score someone, so you want to keep Albert in the game.”

AT THE PLATE: Hamilton had an RBI groundout in the first, a solo homer to center in the fifth, an RBI infield single in the seventh and a hard-hit double in the 12th. “That was very encouraging, to see him square the ball up,” Scioscia said.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver was rocked for six runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked four, and though one of those runners was replaced on a fielder’s-choice grounder, all eventually scored. “It was one of the few games where Weave was really out of sorts and struggled,” Scioscia said.

HIP CHECK: While rehabilitating a right-ankle sprain, left-hander C.J. Wilson found tightness in his left hip that may have contributed to his struggles before going on the disabled list July 10. “I lost total use of my leg in the delivery,” Wilson said. Wilson underwent deep-tissue work and physical therapy and felt “way better” in a double-A start Monday. He could return to the rotation Saturday.

LINEUP SWITCH: Hamilton’s move from left field to designated hitter before the game had nothing to do with the bruised left knee that sidelined him Saturday. Hamilton stayed up most of Monday night in North Carolina with his father-in-law, who suffered cuts and bruises in a car accident Sunday. “The knee is close to 100%,” Hamilton said, “but I got no sleep and am pretty tired. Therefore, I’m going to DH.”
