Sweden’s Mats Wilander advanced to the third round of the $325,000 Jacomo Monte Carlo Open Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hungary’s Balazs Taroczy.

Wilander was appearing in his first 1985 major test on clay, the surface he likes best.

Defending champion Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden downed Eduardo Costa of Spain, 6-4, 6-4, and now will face Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, who overpowered Tarik Benhabiles of France, 6-2, 7-6.

In an upset, Martin Jaite of Argentina ousted eighth-seeded Juan Aguilera of Spain, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.

Unseeded Mike Bauer upset fifth-seeded Eliot Teltscher, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of a $315,000 Grand Prix tournament at Chicago.

Bauer said he watched the fight go out of Teltscher in the second set. “I don’t know what happened,” Bauer said. “I didn’t have the guts to ask him in the shower. He just gave up. I had to fight to keep my concentration.”
