Grants totaling $945,000 were made by the state Department of Health Services to four research projects and six treatment centers--including five Southland facilities--in the effort find the cause of Alzheimer’s Disease. Department Director Kenneth Kizer said the malady affects 200,000 Californians and is a major reason for the institutionalization of many elderly people. It causes progressive deterioration of the central nervous system, producing disorientation, personality deterioration and physical incapacity. Among the grant recipients are Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, the USC Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, the UC San Diego School of Medicine, the UCLA School of Medicine and the VA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
