A Roman Catholic laborer was shot to death Monday and police arrested a member of a part-time British defense force in connection with the slaying.

David Love, 26, was shot at close range while walking to his home in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh in the southwest of the province.

The Ulster Freedom Fighters, an outlawed paramilitary group supporting British rule, claimed responsibility for the shooting. It said Love was a member of the Irish Republican Army fighting to end British rule in Northen Ireland.

Police said they were questioning a member of the locally-recruited and mainly part-time Ulster Defense Regiment, whose membership is overwhelmingly Protestant about the murder and other crimes in the area.
