A 39-year-old Mexican national was fatally shot and a companion wounded early Saturday in Santa Ana in what may have been part of a family feud, police said.

According to Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dan Carr, Cesario Saavedra Herrera, Miguel Bravo Lucero and Donasiano Saavedra were walking to a gardening job at 6 a.m. when a white car pulled up and parked a few feet in front of them in the 1500 block of South Standard Avenue. A man stepped out from the passenger side and fired at least four pistol shots at the three men before the car sped away.

Carr said Saavedra Herrera died instantly from a gunshot wound to the torso. Lucero was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was listed in serious but stable condition with a gunshot wound to the lower back. The third man was not hurt in the incident.

All three were Mexican nationals, Carr said. He said investigators were still searching for the gunman.

“Investigators think this was the result of a family feud originating in Mexico some time back,” Carr said.
