The executive officer of the Naval Air Reserve unit at Point Mugu Naval Air Station was killed when his light plane crashed in northern San Diego County. Capt. Vaughan Austin Hawkins, 42, of Escondido was a veteran jet pilot and had served in the Navy for 21 years. His single-engine plane crashed in rainy weather on old U.S. 395 about one-fourth mile south of Rainbow. A deputy San Diego County coroner said there was some indication that Hawkins’ plane struck some power lines while he was flying low to get under rain clouds.
