UCSD Loses, 6-5; Aztecs Rained Out
Lou Kent hit a bases-loaded single that drove in the tying and winning runs Friday as Grand Canyon College beat visiting UC San Diego, 6-5, in nonconference college baseball action.
The Tritons (22-21-1) had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead after 7 1/2 innings. Jim Martin hit a three-run home run to cap UCSD’s five-run uprising in the top of the eighth.
But, an error, a single and a walk loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the ninth, setting the stage for Kent’s single off Triton reliever Rick Davis (1-5).
Tony Waldrop (5-3), who pitched the ninth inning for Grand Canyon, picked up the win.
San Diego State was also scheduled to play Friday, but a doubleheader at New Mexico was rained out. The Aztecs (5-11 in conference, 41-25-1 overall) are in last place in the Western Athletic Conference; the Lobos are in first at 10-4.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today, also in New Mexico.
