A group of Soviet air force generals and other officers stationed in the Carpathian Mountains “tragically perished” in the line of duty last week, the Soviet military newspaper Red Star reported. It gave no details on the incident and did not say how many were killed, but it identified two of the dead as Maj. Gens. Evgeny Krapivin and Viktor Dotsenko. Western sources said the officers probably died in a plane crash in the Carpathians, which stretch from southern Poland into Romania.
