Prep Baseball : University Gets Win, Title, 12-1

University High School, behind the pitching of senior right-hander Mark Stride, beat Saddleback, 12-1, Thursday at Saddleback to clinch its first baseball league championship in the school’s 13-year history.

The Trojans, thanks to Stride’s complete-game, two-hitter with 10 strikeouts, won the Sea View League with a 12-2 record, one game in front of second-place Estancia. Stride improved his record to 8-0, while University improved to 12-8 overall.

Center fielder Mark Favorite paced the offense with four hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning, three RBIs and three runs. Right fielder Roger Wilson added three hits and three runs and left fielder Steve Conner had two hits, two RBIs and two runs.

In other Sea View League action:

Estancia 5, Costa Mesa 2--The Eagles wrapped up second place with the win over the Mustangs at Costa Mesa’s Tewinkle Park. Raul Jara pitched 5 innings in relief to earn the victory, and Eric Van Doren went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and scored a run.

Scott Clements and Jim Foley added two hits apiece for Estancia, which finished the regular season at 11-3 in league and 18-8 overall. Tom Panirisi added an RBI single. Costa Mesa finished at 5-9 and 9-16.

Newport Harbor 7, Woodbridge 0--The Sailors (10-4, 14-10), who will enter the Southern Section playoffs as the league’s third-place representative, were led by Joey James, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning, had two hits and scored twice at Newport Harbor.

Dean Martinez allowed five hits and struck out four over five innings to pick up the win, and Todd Lawrence added two hits and an RBI. For James, it was his 7th home run and 31st RBI of the season. Woodbridge closes at 5-9 and 9-13.

Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Beach 0--Steve Satchell pitched a complete game, struck out seven and had three hits and an RBI to lead the Sea Kings past the Artists at Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings close the season at 4-10 league and 5-16 overall, while Laguna Beach finished at 3-11 and 5-18. In Olympic League action:

Brethren 5, Orange Lutheran 4--Bryan Jordan struck out eight in his complete-game win over the Lancers at Blair Field. The Warriors got eight hits in the win, while Orange Lutheran managed seven hits, including a three-run homer by Matt Zaun. Mike Utke took the loss.
