Former Bill Joe Ferguson Says Trade to Lions Brings New Life
Quarterback Joe Ferguson says his move from the Buffalo Bills to the Detroit Lions has given him a new lease on his NFL career.
“It’s kind of refreshing and exciting to go to a new place,” Ferguson said during the Lions’ mini camp at Oakland University in Rochester. “It’s kind of brought a new life and more enthusiasm than I had before.”
Ferguson, a 12-year veteran out of Arkansas, was acquired by the Lions in an April 30 trade. He is vying with veteran Eric Hipple for the team’s starting quarterback job.
“I’m impressed with this team in just the short time I’ve seen them,” said Ferguson, 35. “Especially with the defense, the way they move around and cover.”
Ferguson says he’s overcoming early problems he had getting to know his new receivers and rookie Coach Darryl Rogers’ offensive system.
“It’s difficult from the point that you look around and see people you don’t know,” Ferguson said. “It takes awhile to feel each other out, for me to get to know them and them to get to know me.”
Ferguson said he likes Rogers’ emphasis on a downfield passing game.
“With the rule changes you’ve had in the past few years, you can throw the ball more,” he said. “But you still need a semi-balance with it. You’ve got to be able to run the ball, no matter what.”
