The Ku Klux Klan has filed a $6-million lawsuit against the San Francisco Police Department, charging that the organization was illegally banned from demonstrating during the Democratic National Convention last year. Six klansmen from Modesto were stopped by police on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge while en route to the Moscone Convention Center on July 19. They contend they were searched and taken to the Hall of Justice, where they were told they could not demonstrate. They were then escorted out of town by police. The suit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court by Imperial Wizard William Albers, alleges that the klansmen’s constitutional freedom of speech and protection against illegal search were violated.
