About $90,000 worth of diamond jewelry was stolen from a La Jolla jewelry store Thursday after a store clerk brought the thief to the back of the store to see “the good stuff” in the safe, San Diego police said.

Police spokesman Bill Robinson said the thief was a neatly dressed man who told the sales clerk at Anthony Piaf Jewels on Silverado Avenue that he wanted something special for his wife’s birthday.

When the clerk opened the safe to display the store’s diamond jewelry, the man showed him a gun in his waistband.

The man escaped on foot with a bracelet, a watch, two pairs of earrings, two necklaces and a ring, all made with diamonds, Robinson said.
