Local News in Brief : Child Molester Gets Year in Jail
Arepairman who molested an 8-year-old girl who lived next door to him in Sunland was sentenced Thursday to a year in jail.
Judge Edward I. Gorman of San Fernando Superior Court also ordered the man, Fred N. Winters, 40, to pay $1,000 to a state fund for crime victims.
Gorman could have ordered Winters to serve as much as eight years in prison. He said he imposed the lighter sentence because of a diagnostic report characterizing the molestation as an isolated incident, Winters’ lack of a criminal record and his expressions of remorse.
Winters pleaded guilty in January to a single count of penetration with a foreign object in the May, 1983, molestation.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Lucienne Coleman, who prosecuted the case, said Winters has spent enough time in jail to make him eligible for parole in about three months.
