What did Leonard Bernstein have in mind when he palmed off as "A Capitol Fourth" that appallingly pretentious program of atonal music set to the poems of such popular favorites as Corso, Ferlinghetti, Hughes and, for goodness' sake, Gertie Stein? What hutzpah to offer such self-indulgence when the audience wanted rousing Sousa marches. The lame shuffling proved to be anything but "Capitol."
