The House Appropriations Committee voted Wednesday to exempt members of Congress from paying local personal property taxes on cars registered in neighboring Virginia.

The panel included the exemption in approving the District of Columbia’s $2.3-billion budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Members of Congress who live in the district or in Maryland are not affected as those areas do not have a personal property tax on cars.
