Four cases of malaria have been diagnosed in the Merced County community of Los Banos, but a community health center physician said three of them may have originated in Latin America. Dr. George Rosenthal said two of the victims may have come from an area of the Mexican west coast where there has been a malaria outbreak. He speculated that a third case could be traced to El Salvador. But he said one case may have originated in Los Banos, indicating the disease is being carried by local mosquitoes.
