Favored Prakas set a world trotting record...
Favored Prakas set a world trotting record and a money-winning record for 3-year-olds by winning two straight heats at the fifth World Trotting Derby at Du Quoin, Ill.
Prakas, driven by Bill O’Donnell, won the second heat in 1:53:40, eclipsing a mark of 1:53:80 set jointly last year by Cornstalk and Fancy Crown at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Ill.
Prakas, son of 1971 Hambletonian winner Speed Crown, was such a heavy favorite he was ruled out of the parimutuel betting at the Du Quoin State Fair’s track.
The winner’s prize of $276,875 boosted Prakas’s career total to $1,567,323, making him the richest trotter in history at this stage in his career.
