Francois Homberger of Switzerland held a commanding lead in the 5.5-meter world championship despite a second-place finish in the third race Thursday.

The defending champion is 11.4 points ahead of his nearest rival, Bob Mosbacher of Houston, and 12.7 ahead of Albert Fay, also from Houston. Fay was the winner of Thursday’s race.

The seven-race regatta is being sailed off Newport Beach under the host Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Final scoring will be based on the best six races under the Olympic penalty scoring system.
