Two cosmonauts landed their Soyuz T-13 spacecraft in the central Asian desert today, leaving three other crew members aboard the orbiting Salyut-7 space station following the first crew exchange in space.

Tass said Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Georgy Grechko returned to Earth aboard their Soyuz T-13 in Kazakhstan. Vladimir Vasyutin, Viktor Savinykh and Alexander Volkov were continuing work aboard the scientific research station, it said.

The crew exchange was considered a big step for the Soviet space program, indicating the Soviets may attempt to keep the space station permanently staffed.
