Small Hotels of Europe

My wife and I very much enjoyed the Nov. 10 Rome feature article with its lovely color picture of the Spanish Steps, a scene which is quite familiar to both of us. We particularly enjoyed the mention of Pensione Texas in the last two paragraphs. We stayed there in 1964 while on a six-month jaunt around Europe during the winter and spring, the high point of which was attendance at the Winter Olympic Games at Innsbruck.

As a first-generation Italian-American I do have a small ax to grind, however. I do not know whether to blame the typesetter, Stephanie Powers or Jerry but there are no such words in Italian as motto effecto. No doubt what was meant was con molto affetto, meaning “with much love.”

Also, on the small-scale map of Rome the spelling of Corso Vittorio Emanuele was misspelled as “Emenuele.” Since this was my father’s first name the error jumped out of the page at me. Another spelling error on the map is Santa Maria in Trastevere, not “Trestevere.”

In any case, the Travel Section is always must reading for the two of us, and we find many interesting and helpful articles in it.
