Banks Heads World Class Field at Northridge Invitational Meet

World record-holder Willie Banks, hurdler Andre Phillips and heptathlete Jackie Joyner lead a list of world-class athletes set to compete in the Northridge Invitational track and field meet at 9:30 a.m. today at the Cal State Northridge track.

Banks set the triple jump record last year at 58-11 1/2 and was ranked No. 1 in the world in 1985 by Track and Field News magazine. He competes in his specialty at 3:30 this afternoon.

Phillips is a versatile hurdler who produced his finest season in 1985. He was ranked No.1 in the world in the 400-meter intermediates (47.67) and No. 3 in the 110-meter high hurdles (13.25). He runs in the high hurdles at 10 a.m.

Joyner, the 1984 Olympic heptathlon silver medalist, is scheduled to compete in four events. She is the American record holder in the long jump (23-9) but is not entered in that event. She will compete in the 100-meter low hurdles at 10:35, the shot put at 11:00, the javelin at 11:30 and the high jump at 2:30.

Other world-class competitors include Olympians Innocent Egbunike of Nigeria and Amadou Ba of Senegal in the 400 meters, Bill Green in the hammer throw and Jodi Anderson in the long jump. Randy Givens, the 1985 NCAA sprint champion, will compete in the women’s 100.

Gary Jackson leads the CSUN entries. The school record-holder in the long jump (25-3), Jackson is scheduled to compete in the 100 and 200 meters.

Keith Copeland (400) and Ken Joerger (800) are two other Matador men to watch.

Division II All-Americans Lori Costello and Sue Patterson lead the Northridge women. Costello will compete in the long jump, triple jump. Patterson is entered in the high jump, 100 hurdles, javelin and 800.
