Little is being done to assimilate the 60,000 to 80,000 American Indians living in Los Angeles County into an urban environment, community leaders said during a Bell Gardens conference sponsored by the Los Angeles City-County Native American Indian Commission and the county Commission on Human Rights. Officials testified that 100 different tribes in the county face poverty and job discrimination. Leaders said job training and placement services are needed to help alleviate the problem.
