San Diego
Normal Heights, a community still rebuilding from one of San Diego’s most disastrous fires, has been named an All America City by the National Municipal League and the nationally circulated newspaper USA Today.
Normal Heights was cited for redeveloping itself before and after the raging June 30 brush fire that destroyed or damaged more than 100 homes, said Debra Collins, a league spokeswoman in New York.
“We’re absolutely delighted,” said Patricia Getzel, executive director of the Normal Heights Community Development Corp. “We’ve known for a long time that this neighborhood was deserving of the recognition. Now the rest of the country knows.”
Eight other communities or cities around the nation also received the All America City title, Collins said.
She said Normal Heights’ application was rated on the scope of the redevelopment project, the project’s effect on the community’s 13,500 citizens and citizen participation.
