Violence Breaks Out as Atlantic City Hotel Workers Strike
About 13,000 union waitresses, maids, bartenders and other hotel workers walked off their jobs today in the first strike against Atlantic City’s casino industry, and hundreds of pickets broke windows and cruised the streets in packed cars.
Rocks and bottles were thrown at police trying to keep order at several Boardwalk casinos and nine people were arrested, police said. Five minor injuries were reported.
Pickets mobbed and disabled a shuttle bus carrying replacement workers to Caesars Atlantic City, then broke several of the vehicle’s windows. At the Sands Hotel, Casino & Country Club, a marquee was smashed.
A judge issued a temporary restraining order to the Golden Nugget limiting to two the number of pickets permitted at each entrance.
The casinos vowed to stay open and promised that gambling will continue.
