Community College Roundup : Cypress Powers Its Way Past L.A. Valley, 10-7

Rey Hernandez, Mark Steinert and Trevor Hoffman each hit a home run Thursday to help the Cypress College baseball team defeat L.A. Valley, 10-7, in a nonconference game played on Cypress’ field.

Hernandez also drove in the go-ahead run, an RBI single in the sixth that gave Cypress (11-5) an 8-7 lead. Hoffman’s two-run home run--his third hit of the game--in the eighth gave the Chargers their three-run cushion.

Hernandez and Steinert hit bases-empty home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Kevin Bumgarner, who pitched the final 3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three, got the victory.

In other nonconference games:

Orange Coast 10, Golden West 6--Dave Staton hit a two-run home run in the third inning, Mike Lujan hit a three-run home run in the seventh, and Joey James hit a two-run home run in the eighth to lead the Pirates (11-3) past the Rustlers (3-2) at Golden West.

Darrin Tomasick hit a three-run home run to bring Golden West back in the ninth, and the Rustlers loaded the bases off reliever Brett Johnson on two walks and a hit. But Scott Stoerck came in and struck out Keith Laszlo for the final out. Starter Dave Dawson pitched eight innings to earn the victory.

Rancho Santiago 13, Cal Poly Pomona JV 6--Brent Reese went 2 for 3 with five RBIs, including a three-run home run in the first inning, to lead the Dons past the Broncos at Rancho Santiago. Frank Appice and Wade Clester each added two hits for the Dons (7-2).
