BRIEFLY : Garza to Fight Ruelaz in Tournament

Jaime Garza, the former World Boxing Council super-bantamweight champion, fights Joe Ruelaz (20-3, 16 knockouts) Monday night in the second round of a $100,000 featherweight tournament at the Forum. Garza is 45-2 with 42 knockouts.

The 27-year-old Garza, a former Pacoima resident, won a unanimous decision over Dwight Pratchett last month in the first round of the tournament.

Monday’s card begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Garza-Ruelaz 10-rounder set for about 8.

Lakes to Compete in Gymnastics Regional

Charles Lakes, formerly of Monroe High and the top U.S competitor at the Goodwill Games, will be be among more than 200 competitors at the Regional Junior Olympic Gymnastic Championships today and Sunday at Calabasas High.

The competition, sponsored by California Sun Gymnastics, will feature participants aged 10-18 who will compete for the opportunity to qualify for the national championships in Kansas City in June.

This weekend’s meet serves as the first qualifying meet for the U.S Nationals, World University Games, Pan American Games ands World Championships.
