Tunisian President Zine Abidine ben Ali ended his fourth week in office by granting amnesty to 2,487 prisoners, including hundreds of Islamic fundamentalists and a prominent politician. The official Tunisian news agency TAP said that among those to be freed by the president’s action were 608 members of the outlawed Islamic Tendency Movement and Ahmed Mestiri, leader of the Movement of Socialist Democrats, who was imprisoned for organizing demonstrations against the U.S. bombing of Libya in 1986. Ben Ali came to power Nov. 7, replacing Habib Bourguiba as president.
