Boys’ Roundup : Speaker Scores 32 in El Toro Win

Eric Speaker scored a game-high 32 points to lead El Toro High School to a 67-53 victory over Long Beach Wilson Friday in one semifinal of the San Clemente boys’ basketball tournament at San Clemente.

Robb Johnson, the freshman brother of quarterback Bret Johnson, added 15 for El Toro (4-0), which plays San Diego Lincoln tonight in the final at 8.

San Diego Lincoln defeated Foothill, 68-65, in the other semifinal.

In other San Clemente games:

San Clemente 57, Capistrano Valley Christian 54--Mike Peters scored 19 points and had 6 assists for San Clemente (1-4), which advances to the consolation championship today at 4:45 against Savanna. Brian Reichard scored 10 for San Clemente.

Savanna 83, Laguna Beach 67--Richard Kemple scored 11 points and had 13 assists for Savanna in a consolation game.

Eric Schinkle scored a game-high 17 points for Savanna (3-1), which led, 42-19, at the half.

In nonleague games:

Valencia 52, Sonora 47--Bernie James scored 18 points to lead Valencia (3-2) at Sonora. Jeff Crow scored 14 points for Sonora (2-3). Corona del Mar 78, Costa Mesa 61--Geoff Probst scored a game-high 22 points and had 8 steals and 9 assists for Corona del Mar at Costa Mesa.

Ocean View 66, Los Alamitos 64--Greg Evans made two free throws with 22 seconds left in the second overtime for the Seahawks at home. Mike Frohn and Todd Norman each scored 20 points for Ocean View (3-2). Dre Lamourez had 17 points and Brett Pagett 15 for the Griffins (3-2).

Newport Harbor 66, Villa Park 55 (OT)--The Sailors made 12 free throws in overtime to pull away for the victory at Villa Park. The Spartans had a chance to win the game in regulation when Steve Waldrip was fouled while scoring the layup that tied the score. However, Waldrip missed the free throw. Jim Geerlings scored 15 points and Kyle Koons had 14 to lead Newport Harbor (4-1). Waldrip scored 15 points for Villa Park (0-3).

University 47, Irvine 41--Steve Stolzoff scored 27 points, as the host Trojans (4-2) rallied for the victory. University trailed, 23-8, at halftime, but outscored the Vaqueros, 24-6, in the third quarter. David Balentyne scored 16 points for Irvine (2-3).

Western 58, Rancho Alamitos 57--Chris Bowen scored 22 points, including five three-point baskets, to lead the host Pioneers (5-0). Western outscored the Vaqueros, 19-8, in the third quarter.

Newport Christian 77, Riverside Christian 26--The Conquerors held the Cougars scoreless during the first quarter and eased to victory. John Bahnsen scored 19 points and Wayne Everett 14 for Newport Christian (1-3).
