Irvine City Council at its Tuesday meeting will explore the remaining options in its quest for a homeless shelter in the city. A controversial plan to convert a vacant dog kennel into a 50-bed shelter for homeless Irvine families was apparently quashed when federal officials recently canceled a $496,000 grant to finance the project.

The proposed Sand Canyon Avenue site is less than a mile from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. A letter from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development cited possible adverse effects on shelter residents from the noise of jets passing overhead as the reason for canceling the grant.

Irvine might still receive the grant if an acceptable alternative site is found, but some city officials have said there are no other feasible sites. The city has 60 days to reapply for the grant.
