PRO FOOTBALL : Quick Work Gives Eagles 38-27 Victory Over Jets

Call him World B. Quick.

Mike Quick’s teammates were shouting the wide receiver’s praises Sunday after Quick caught 6 passes for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 38-27 victory over the New York Jets.

Quick always seemed to be wide open against the injury-ravaged Jet secondary. But he was surrounded by a dozen other Eagles in the dressing room after the game, all of them shouting “World, World” at Quick.

“When you’ve got a guy like Mike Quick out there, you’re throwing to the best,” said Randall Cunningham, who also threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to rookie Cris Carter. “It means a lot to have all the weapons we have.”

Quick is the most dangerous of those weapons, as he proved Sunday with touchdown receptions of 45 and 13 yards in the second quarter.

“We did the things we wanted to do,” Quick said. “We knew they had some new guys in there and we tried to confuse them.”

Safety Harry Hamilton, who was burned on Quick’s second touchdown as well as being whistled for a 37-yard interference penalty against him, expected a difficult time from Quick.

“That guy is a danger, he is always a threat,” Hamilton said. “The way he runs, it’s almost impossible to keep coverage on him. If you don’t stop the quarterback from throwing the ball, you’re not going to stop Mike Quick from catching it.”

Quick said Cunningham’s ability to read defenses was a major factor in his touchdowns.

“On the 45-yarder, I think a draw was called,” Quick said. “Randall read the blitz and saw I had one on one with a defensive back. I don’t get it too often.

“After that, they started doubling me.”

Not that it helped.

The Jets (6-8) went down to their third straight defeat and have allowed 117 points in those defeats. The Eagles (6-8) are 6-5 in non-strike games.
