Rabbi Leo Jung, Scholar of Jewish Culture

Rabbi Leo Jung, 95, a Talmudic scholar and author of books including a six-volume encyclopedia of Jewish religion and culture. A professor of ethics at Yeshiva University since 1931, Jung had served as rabbi to the Jewish Center in Manhattan since 1922. Jung was chairman of the cultural religious committee of the American Joint Distribution Committee and the New York State advisory board of kosher law enforcement and had served as president of the Rabbinical Council of America and of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. He also served as honorary president of the Beth Jacob Teachers Training College in Jerusalem since 1951 and was a member of the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1950.
