Eritrean rebels fighting Ethiopia’s Marxist government have agreed to let relief agencies bring food for famine victims into their strongholds from government-controlled areas, a British aid expert said. Lionel Cliffe said after a trip to the region that rebels of the Eritrean Popular Liberation Front told him that convoys will be allowed to enter rebel-controlled areas without military escort. However, relief agencies will have to give the rebels details of their movements in advance, Cliffe added. Food convoys to Eritrea and Tigre provinces in northern Ethiopia have frequently been attacked by anti-government rebels.
